Hi, I’m Callum, a second year English Literature student and proud member of UYHC – University of York Hockey Club if it wasn’t already obvious. I’m the hockey club’s ‘Media and Marketing Officer’, and before you ask, yes, that is merely a formal way of saying I’m in charge of spamming everyone on social media and constantly clogging your news feeds.
Over the coming week you will hear from 6 other UYHC members retelling what they’ve learned from their first year playing hockey for the University of York. The aim of this series is to give both prospective and current students a flavour of what it’s like to be a member of one of the most successful and social sports clubs on campus.
For those who know me, making bad decisions seems to be my forte, however, joining UYHC last October certainly wasn’t one of them. This is a sentiment I feel you will hear quite regularly across this series.
After our unrivalled, unbeaten efforts at Roses earlier this year – our varsity tournament with Lancaster which is the largest in Europe – we’re all very excited about the new BUCS season getting underway. With a number of 1st team players leaving last season, in both male and female teams, places in every side are going to be hotly contested offering a level of competition we hope will lead us to bigger and better things. We’re also holding pre-season training from September 20-26th to help old and new members prepare for the start of what is lining up to be a very exciting season.
If you’re worried that your skill level isn’t up to scratch, don’t worry, I got more yellow cards than goals last season so you can come and warm the bench with me. And besides, on field antics are only half of what makes UYHC so great. Wednesday socials are a hallowed and sacrosanct ritual across all sports clubs, and UYHC certainly is no exception. We also organise other impromptu socials for varying reasons, mainly giving us an excuse to go out and have a laugh together.
As an English student I really have all the time in the world, but even those who are doing proper degrees find the time to dedicate to the club, and some students have even undertaken Masters so they can keep playing, which is testament to how great the hockey club is.
Joining a sports club at University is something you will certainly not regret, even less so if you join UYHC. Hopefully this series will answer many of your questions but if any remain unanswered don’t hesitate to email email@example.com.
We look forward to meeting you in the next few weeks.
Apparently you aren't meant to tackle like this...
Christmas Ball was certainly one of the year's highlights
