I don’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t played hockey, whether that be for school, club or county. I always knew I wanted to play hockey at University level but I also wanted it to be fun and rewarding! After speaking to a few of the members I knew that UYHC was the sports club for me. Initially I was nervous about being too unfit or being a bit rusty, but when it came down to it – it really didn’t matter!
What was your favourite experience in a UYHC shirt?
Easily Roses! Roses is the biggest game of the season and represented the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work. We showed up on that pitch and meant business! The Ladies 3X1 was the first match of the day… no pressure… After some great hockey we ended victorious, starting off what went on to be a whitewash for UYHC. Oh and I kept a clean sheet.
What do you like most about the social side of UYHC?
We are like a family. Regardless of age or gender we all get along! Wednesday nights are a highlight of any hockey player’s week – when again would you be able to make your way into town in a piece of green material that you bought from a charity shop trying to pass it off as a frog costume? The more ridiculous your outfit, the better the night!
Wednesday socials are definitely the best nights of the week as they lie on match day which means that regardless of whether you win or lose you end up being surrounded with your team mates and friends! Not only that but it is also the perfect time to catch up on weekly gossip! Thursday afternoon hangover lunches on campus are also a staple of any sportsman’s diary, allowing everyone to hear about the previous night’s antics with some yummy food that you wouldn’t be able to cook in your fragile state.
Why should freshers join UYHC this October?
All freshers should seriously consider joining UYHC this October as we really are the most fun - we play hard and party harder. We also work as a team to achieve our on-field goals which makes the nights out all the more rewarding. Not only that but the people you play with end up being the closest friends you have at University.
We want everyone to have fun and enjoy hockey whether that be as a member of the Ladies 1X1 or 3X1. Come and join us, you won’t regret it.
