I had always planned on joining the club before starting at York as I’d played a fair amount of hockey back home. The fact that everyone was so welcoming and had a good attitude when on the pitch as well as the club having a very organised setup made me realise that I had definitely made the right decision.
What was your favourite experience in a UYHC shirt?
Easily the 3-0 Roses victory against Lancaster.
It was something we had looked forward to and worked very hard preparing for all season. All of our hard work was made worthwhile at the final whistle when we won in front of a big York crowd and some disconsolate Lancastrians. It also confirmed a whitewash for the men’s side of the club and afterwards the Ladies 1st XI managed to ensure we finished unbeaten as a whole club, wrapping up a quality weekend.
What do you like most about the social side of UYHC?
Wednesday nights in Salvo are always class. But the best thing is that we don’t just settle for that, as we have social events all the time from something as little as pre-match team meals to a yearly tour abroad, the latter being something certainly not to be missed.
We also have some great characters including our soft hearted and most reserved member, Alex Lake along with our other male social sec, Matt Hyde who can hold his breath for ages and enjoys SCUBA diving. Furthermore, we are a formidale presence on social media. Follow us on Instagram or Twitter for regular UYHC updates and visit our Facebook to find out just about everything else you need to know about the club.
Why should freshers join UYHC this October?
UYHC is the biggest and best club on campus, aside from Quidditch though obviously. With three teams on either side of the club, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re more interested in the playing side or the social side you are an equally important part of UYHC either way (our current male President is certainly proof of the latter).
UYHC isn’t just about playing hockey once a week, you make some great mates and memories.
Also, if you’re really good I’d quite like you in my team.
