As a sixth form student, I enjoyed playing for my local hockey club and thought that I would greatly miss it when I went to university. I was keen to get involved in hockey at university- little did I realise just how great it would be! I was lucky enough to attend UYHC's preseason last year after reading about it on the UYHC Facebook page. Although I was so nervous before I arrived, the second year who I was staying with quickly made me feel comfortable and welcome and I soon met some other freshers who were to become my closest friends in my first year. Pre-season was the perfect mix between hockey and social events which meant I felt integrated into the club before the university year had even begun.
UYHC is undoubtedly my favourite part of university and I can't imagine what first year would have been like without all the training sessions, Wednesday night socials, and memories that the club brings with it! The club is very tight knit and all the teams work together which means there’s plenty of opportunity for progression. I began my year playing for the 2nd XI but I am now playing for the 1st XI. One of my favourite memories has to be Roses 2016 away at Lancaster university! After so much preparation and anticipation for the event it was great to go away and put up a great performance against Lancaster, winning 1-0 indoor and drawing 2-2 outdoor. I am already excited for next year when we’ll be aiming to beat Lancaster once again on our home turf. As for reasons why anyone interested in hockey should join UYHC, well I say why not? If you want to get the most out of university, make a group of great friends and improve your hockey, join the UYHC family!
