Before coming to university, I played hockey once a week, either a training session or a match. It was for a local team so was a decent standard but was always fairly relaxed. So as I arrived at York I was a little overwhelmed by the prospect of joining a university team, thinking it would mean hundreds of early morning training and fitness sessions, and that the whole thing would be too serious to enjoy. However, after meeting some of the UYHC members at the freshers’ fair, I decided to attend the trials and give university hockey a shot.
Looking back, the decision to trial was such an important one in shaping how much I have enjoyed my first year at uni. The training sessions were much more enjoyable than I had expected (and at sensible hours!). The matches were something to look forward to each week, with the varsity games against Lancaster in Roses 2017 definitely being a highlight of my year! I made some great friends from the club, and the fact that the there are so many members means you always end up seeing people you know around the campus and town, which is great, especially in the first few weeks when you otherwise wouldn't know many people. And of course, the club socials are always one of the best nights out York offers.
I would definitely advise everyone to join the club as it's a great way to make friends and play a great sport. You won't regret it!
