UYHC has been one of the highlights of my first year at York. Being part of the club has become a pivotal aspect to termly life and I can't imagine uni without it!
Full of nerves and doubting my ability, I showed up to the trial sessions with little expectancy of securing a place on a team and left with much the same attitude. But to my surprise I was invited to attend training, renewing a confidence in myself and an excitement about the oportunity to continue playing a sport I love; not to mention the socials..
There is more to the club than playing hockey. Each Wednesday (usually after a match) I would dress up in whatever I could find lying around that adequately or perfectly (I felt anyway) matched the theme description for the night and join everyone at the social. This is where I got to know members of the club much better, especially those on other teams and I found that we're all a big family really, who enjoy each other's company, linked through our enthusiasm about hockey. Inevitably, each week I felt more at home in the club.
I love that feeling you get just before a match begins, the mixture of nerves and excitement, the desire to perform well and take a win; BUCs league was therefore a great experience for me and it only became more rewarding as the season progressed. This climaxed at Roses, adrenaline was running high after an intense two weeks of fitness and training, we competed against Lancaster. And no one can prepare you for the incredible weekend that is Roses so I'll leave you with that cliff hanger..
This year for me has been about discovering that hockey at university isn't being the perfect player and ticking all the boxes, it's about having a laugh, making a whole lot of friends and trying your best at a sport you love. So if you have any doubts about signing up like I did, there's honestly no need! Come along and give UYHC a try, you won't regret it.
